Stretching - The Foreplay to Working Out!

Just like foreplay in the bedroom stretching before the workout can help to create a prolonged experience, less risk of injury, relieves stress, increases ones flexibility and it invigorates the circulatory system. Stretching is one of the most beneficial and underestimated portions of the work out, it's easy to do and the benefits are vast. Like foreplay where the term "preheat the oven" is used it is also applicable in working out. By stretching pre-workout you are basically preheating your own oven in preparation to do what you came to accomplish, a solid workout.

Four Solid Tips for Stretching

Do a quick warm up. Your muscles once they are warmed up are more responsive to stretching. So pre-stretch, it's a good idea to do a low intensity exercise for about five minutes prior to stretching.
Take your time, relax and breathe freely. It takes a good 20 seconds per stretch to fully lengthen tissues safely. Never hold your breath while stretching. When you hold your breath you are creating tension in the muscles that makes it difficult to fully stretch. Breath slow and deep, it will not only help you to stretch your muscles, but it will also increase blood and oxygen flow throughout the body.
Never stretch an injured area. Continue to stretch the uninjured muscle groups, but always wait until the strained or injured area has fully healed before stretching it.
Never bounce! Bouncing feels as if it is helping during the stretching process, but it is really creating small teas in your muscles. These tears leave scar tissue which will make you less flexible and more prone to pain.

Locate a good set of full body stretches, practice the tips above and make it part of your workout. Overtime if the stretching is continued your will reap the benefits of improved circulation, higher levels of endurance, better sleep and much more.
